--- tag: web3 --- # A Mission To Supercharge Civic Innovation (under review) ![](https://s3-ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com/g0v-hackmd-images/uploads/upload_e1f9f4d864bf2f7042472fbc123d413a.png) Taiwan is an unique place, marginalized yet right between global super powers, minimized yet excelled in many unexpected ways. Taiwanese of this generation seek purpose, some through efforts such as g0v, others through baseball players they call *the pride of Taiwan*. Meaning, I believe, is yet to be found. Individuals on this island are eager to find our place and our contributions to the world. Glen Weyl, the author of *Radical Markets*, pointed to Taiwan as the global leading example of digital democracy, much of which can be attributed to g0v. As part of g0v, vTaiwan’s open deliberation platform is still being mentioned as a leading civic innovation even after years of operation halt. Cofacts’ decade-long efforts in combatting fake news have also been plauded as a valuable solution to social media madness. Yet g0v is not without challenges. Voluntary project owners, driven by passion, have struggled to find suitable contributors to push things forward. Projects who have gained traction, have had trouble locating resources to sustain and scale. With less constant and visible successes, younger generation has failed to resonate as much as they used to. g0v is nothing short of a miracle, it’s the result of deep beliefs in civic spirits from tens of thousands of individuals. da0 (pronounced dao-zero), as a new initiative in g0v, has zero intention to change, but all the intention to deepen and accelerate. da0 wants to help, with tools we learned from web3, we believe we can. New technologies, without exception, should never promise utopias, for that only creates then vs now, old vs new, me vs you. Web3 can be different, yes it can be used to speculate and to scam, but it can also be used to coordinate human beings for the right causes, should we choose to. Web3 x Democracy is a big topic underdiscussed. Our inspiration comes from June 24th, 2022 *Funding the Commons* conference in New York, hosted by Protocol Labs. Unlike the dazzling NFT events at Marriot Marquis NY, FtC was filled with eye opening research discussions as well as exciting new experiments, all designed towards a new future for public goods. A couple of weeks later, da0 was born. da0 started as a discussion thread on g0v’s Slack general channel, quickly a web3 channel was set up, Google Meets were arranged and momentum was formed, we have charged forward ever since. We believe Taiwan’s unique role in international politics, along with open democracy makes it exceptionally suitable to be the field of civic experimentation for the world. da0 has established relationships with Protocol Labs and Gitcoin, working to infuse thought leadership and world-leading experiments into Taiwan & g0v. At later stage, we export our learnings and success cases globally. This, should sustainably secure our position as a global leader in civic innovation, this is also how, we find a way to contribute to the world. ### da0 Mission Statement : Supercharge g0v > We are nobody, but driven by curiosity, pride and love for Taiwan. > We are democratic, but driven by do-ocracy. > We are locally activated, but connected and impactful globally. > We are decentralized, but driven by leaders, builders, and dreamers . > We are forward, but build upon 10 years of open source success. > We are da0, here to supercharge g0v. Sky is the limit when it comes to imagining what we can build with web3. DID and decentralized society has the potential to build reputation systems that drives the g0v community. Impact certificate and quadratic funding are ideas that might help sustain the impact of successful g0v projects. Censorship-resistent websites might help fighting off potential threats from whoever it is we're trying to be resistent from. To imagine is easy, to understand is hard, despite all forms of excitement, we must discipline ourselves to only build experiments that are truly aligned with our purpose, and truly useful for g0v. If we succeeded in our mission, we would be in a position to build this contribution layer for other societies. Taiwan then, would be unique in a different way. This is no small task and will require more contributors who align with our mission to make this vision a reality. The fun has just begun and you might not want to miss this movement.
